PhD/Postdoctoral Research Title: Comparative Analysis of Spatial Development Policies

PhD/Postdoctoral Research Abstract::

Spatial development policy as a part of development policy with a special accent on the spatial dimension uses comparative analysis as the research and applicative method. Specificity of the spatial dimension is presented through four characteristics of space which are – continuity, territoriality, identity and spatial contents. Comparative analysis can be accomplished on the basis of the differences in the background, in the framework of different territorial levels (local, regional, national, continental or global), based on cultural differences or by comparing different sectoral policies. Six existing comparative studies served as a model to compare spatial planning systems of France and Serbia as two main examples on the national and subnational levels, and also short overviews of the examples of other ten countries in the world chosen following three criteria which are surface of the territory, number of inhabitants and population density. As conclusion of the thesis the need for constitution of comparative planning as a subdiscipline of spatial planning is being justified, using the comparative analysis as the method for research and realization of spatial development policies.
