PhD/Postdoctoral Research Title: Integration of energy issues in architectural design of collective housing

PhD/Postdoctoral Research Abstract::

In the present state of the problems involved in designing low energy buildings, technical solutions appear to be out of phase compared to an architectural approach that lack of tools to understand the issue of energy optimization. Most existing approaches aimed at the implementation of several environmental provisions but they have difficulties to see the impact on the energy behavior of the building and the comfort of users. How to contribute thus to improve the design process so as to constitute a working tool for architects and engineers?
This research focuses on the early stage of the design process. The objective is to measure the relevance of different architectural strategies and propose a methodological tool for integrating building’s energy performance in line with the optimization of comfort.

The methodology is based on systems analysis of different morphological ant typological configurations. A comparative study of cases will reveal the impact of decisions in the early stages of the design process. The objective is to propose a simple formalization of design strategies, and validate their relevance using dynamic simulations. Thus models can be compared on the basis of energy performance, but also from specific standards of comfort.

This approach does not intend to define theoretical models of construction, but to summarize the different possible strategies in the design process by optimizing resources, and integrating them into the architecture. The purpose of the study is to deepen the problem of mismatch between the energy performance and occupant comfort. The objective is to show how different aspects of comfort should play the role of interface in the architectural and engineering design of buildings in order to provide a design tool.
