Introduction

*IMPORTANT NEWS* - the deadline for the submission of abstracts has been extended to 19th February.

AESOP YA is glad to announce its Annual Meeting in Reading, UK from 18th to 20th April, 2012, sponsored by AESOP, and the School of Real Estate and Planning, University of Reading. On the occasion of AESOP's Silver Jubilee, YA also will organise an Intergenerational World Café to discuss the future of AESOP-YA relations as a part of the conference programme.

We would like to invite 32 young scholars, including PhD students, post-doctoral students and early career academics from Europe and elsewhere to share their research ideas, experiences, methods and concerns. The program will comprise of plenary sessions and roundtable discussions, as well as a tour around the Olympics site and the East End of London.

Knowledge transfer between Research and Practice in the field of planning and public policy is a contemporary widely discussed concept and concern for scholars. This meeting invites a broad range of papers on planning and territorial development-related research that address the goals, challenges or opportunities of 'communication' in practice, such as community-based and neighbourhood planning, government and governance issues, and ethical aspects in communication within planning and research processes. We are looking forward to a variety of research and project insights from this field.

Young scholars are requested to send their abstract by 12th February 2012 using the online template and application form. The abstract should not be more than 200 - 500 words, outlining aim of the research, methodology, expected contribution and key references. Successful contributors will be informed by Sunday, February 19, 2012. Invited contributors will be expected to submit their full papers (around 5,000 words) by Sunday 1st of April.

AESOP YA Meetings provide a relaxed environment for participants to present and discuss their research interests and concerns with peers and invited professors. The annual meeting offers a platform for exploring how one can shape or modify their research ideas and future interests. It offers an opportunity for networking, sharing thoughts, and counting on others' experiences for professional development, rather than the mere presentation of a full-fledged research outcome or PhD dissertation.

We are glad to have four professors from across Europe to chair sessions:

Gert de Roo

AESOP Vice President, Professor in Spatial Planning and Head of the Department of Spatial Planning and Environment at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen, the Netherlands.

Yvonne Rydin

Professor of Planning, Environment and Public Policy at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London and Director of the UCL Environment Institute, UK.

Francesco Lo Piccolo

Professor of urban planning, Chair Department of Architecture - Region, City and Landscape Planning Unit, Università degli studi di Palermo, Italy

Ali Madanipour

Professor of Urban Design, School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

We look forward to receive your abstracts and participation*. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with Verena (at verena.peer@boku.ac.at) and / or Chandrima (at Chandrima.mukhopadhyay@ncl.ac.uk) for any further queries.

Thanking you
