Events: Meetings - CE3 - Central and Eastern European Engagement , February 7, 2007

Approximately 1/8 of all YA members are currently researching at universities in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). In light of this fact, the YA Coordination Team has decided to hold its 1^st AESOP Young Academics Meeting – ‘CE³ – Central and Eastern European Engagement’ – in Bratislava, Slovakia. Together with the Central European Research and Training Centre in Spatial Planning, we aim to stimulate discussion and debate on CEE issues and research interests.

We also seek to encourage the participation of CEE scholars with the network as well as foster the exchange of ideas and research among all YA members on issues most pertinent to CEE regions within a planning and urban design context.

Issues to be Addressed

The internal tensions of an expanding Europe as well as global pressures from rapidly changing geographies of competition and innovation, from climate change and from immigration are present in Europe’s many social, economic, political and cultural dimensions of everyday life. Efforts that have taken these changes into account have sought greater economic and social integration with fellow European Member States.

What have been the peculiar features of these processes for the different nations and regions of Central and Eastern Europe? What implications does this have for planning in Europe?

Model

The event will take place at the Architecture Faculty of the Slovak University of Technology from February 7 to February 10, 2007. It will be structured on four parallel workshops, guest talks, and a ‘world café’ for the dynamic interchange of ideas by workshop participants. An event Dinner and YA Drinks gathering, and a guided visit of Bratislava will provide plenty of time to socialize! Target Audience

The event encourages the participation of all researchers currently investigating development and planning issues in Central and Eastern Europe.

Submission Requirements

Each participant will contribute to the event with a short paper of 3,500 – 5,000 words (5-10 pp.). Abstracts must be submitted by October 15, 2006, addressing one of the four track themes at the end of this invitation [here]. Deadline for papers is December 20, 2006.

Your abstract of 300-500 words should contain the following information:

• Central theme: what question are you trying to address?
• Relevance of your topic to Central and Eastern Europe

Important: In order to be published in the booklet of proceedings, papers must be uploaded by the deadline, prepared following the YA editorial guidelines [here], and presented at the CE3 event. Those papers that are not presented at the event will not be considered for publication.
