I am a South African born urban development planner and management specialist. I completed my PhD in 2014 at the Technische Universität Darmstadt and currently hold a junior professorship at the Frankfurt International School of Management.
My general research interests include the broad topics of:
Urban upgrading/regeneration
Fragile social systems
Violence and crime prevention/urban safety and security
Tourism and Event-led urban development strategies
My PhD research focuses on the issue of violent crime prevention in South Africa's townships. International best practices are employed with little adaptation to the local context and the inability to transfer positive results within local policy frameworks is hypothesised to limit transferability of project successes thus hindering the ability of cities/planners to more adequately address the issue of violent crime as one of the main barriers to inclusive urban development.
