Environmental Impacts and Potential Policies for Informal Housing: An Analysis of Dhaka, Bangladesh

PhD Abstract

Housing development has remarkable influence on environment. Informal housing growth has significant adverse environmental effect compared to formal growth. Since, incidences of informal housing development are more prominent in the cities of developing countries; environment is highly exposed to negative effects there. The study highlights the level and extent of consequences of contemporary informal housing activities on environment in fast growing cities of developing countries. The study aims to determine the effectiveness and potentials of a selection of national, regional and local level policies, and strategies to reduce environmental impact of informal housing in developing cities. Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, is the case study city for empirical study.
