The Architecture of the Immigrant: Hungarian architecture in Brazil and architecture paths in Veszprém

PhD Abstract

International migration has been going on for a long time. Societies migrate searching for homes and bring with them a lot of empirical knowledge, culture, traditions, those when finding a new place, are shaped according to where they are inserted in. Over time, this place and these people acquire multicultural aspects, their knowledge, and memories, combined with the physical and geographical characteristics of the place, shape societies. Architecture is a material heritage of these memories, of time, and of the process of acculturation. Memory is also an important element of the local identity and presupposes man's interaction with space. This research project aims to cover questions ranging from understanding the meaning of migrating, as well as the forms of material representation that they bring with them and reinforces it through mainly vernacular architecture. Focusing on the Hungarian architecture in the city of Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil, to where around 200 families, from Veszprém County, and more than 30 families from Székesfehérvár County, settled down at the end of 19th century.
