Profile of Miss Caroline Utrecht University

Caroline

Currently I am a PhD student working at Utrecht University and University of Amsterdam. The topic of my research is the integration of climate adaptation (measures) in planning processes.

General research interests

I am interested in the development of metropolitan areas, urban growth, climate change and the effects of this on the urban design.

PhD/Postdoctoral Research Title

Integration of Climate Adaptation in Urban Planning Processes

PhD Abstract

Dutch urban regions face increased precipitation in the winter and higher temperatures in the summer due to climate change. Urban floods, heat stress and droughts can follow from these weather extremes. In particular dense populated areas and economic core regions are vulnerable to these treats as they may lead to material damages and health issues. Adaptation can address the unavoidable impacts of climate change. Yet, hardly any urban region has acted on the integration of adaptation measures. Many uncertainties related to the rate and magnitude of the impacts, long-term horizons and invisibility restrain cities to integrate of adaptation measures in the planning process.

The integration of climate adaptation is a complex process in which barriers and chances determine the progression and dynamics of the planning process. The aim of my PhD research, sponsored by the Dutch national research program Knowledge for Climate, is to gain insights in the barriers and chances that influence the integration of climate adaptation in urban planning processes. Three Dutch cities and three international cases will be studied to analyze the integration of adaptation measures in planning. .
