John Friedmann and the Young Academics

Dear YA members,

Most of you probably already know that John Friedmann passed away a few days ago (here the news on the website of his former university, UCLA). Not only was John one of the brightest minds in the recent history of the planning discipline, he was also a great friend of the YAs.

In 2015, he took part to our conference in Palermo, where he chaired a session and a workshop on the research-theory-action nexus. No one of us will ever forget his generosity and strength.

We want to put together on our blog a number of short comments by all those who want to share their experience with John and his ideas. We already asked Laura Saija – who chaired the workshop in Palermo together with John – to write a commentary on that experience; and look forward to receive very short pieces (150-200 words), by those who were in Palermo and those who were not.

Thanks to the flexibility of the blog we’ll upload the texts on a rolling basis, and plan to publish the first texts sometime next week (the week of 19 June 2017).

Please send your contribution to yamail@aesop-youngacademics.net and simone.tulumello@ics.ulisboa.pt.

Best wishes,

Simone Tulumello
